1、富润屋,德润身,心广体胖。

  译文:创造财富有个大原则:生产的人多,消费的人少,创造得迅速,使用得舒缓,这样国家财富就可以经常保持充足。
Translation: A great principle exists in creating wealth: many people produce it, few people consume it, it is created rapidly, and used leisurely, thus the wealth will always be adequate.

  4、好人之所恶,恶人之所好,是谓拂人之性,菑必逮夫身。
4. To take pleasure in what is despised by the virtuous, and to despise what is cherished by the wicked, is to go against human nature; disaster will surely befall one’s own body.
  译文:喜好人们所厌恶的,厌恶人们所喜好的,这就叫做违背人的本性,灾害必定会落到他的身上。
1. He who takes pleasure in what others detest and detests what others take pleasure in is going against human nature, and disaster will surely befall him.

  5、君子有诸己而后求诸人,无诸已而后非诸人。所藏乎身不恕,而能喻诸人者,未之有也。
2. A gentleman demands things from himself first before seeking them from others, and refrains from imposing on others what he himself does not have. There has never been anyone who does not practice tolerance in himself yet can enlighten others.
  译文:君子对于优点,要自己身上拥有以后再去要求别人;对于缺点,要自己身上没有以后再去批评别人。自己身上所拥有的不是恕道,却能够去教导别人的,是从来没有的。
1. A gentleman should possess virtues before demanding them from others; criticize others’ faults only after eliminating one’s own. 2. It has never been the case that someone can teach others without embodying the path of forgiveness in themselves.

  6、所谓诚其意者,毋自欺也。如恶恶臭,如好好色,此之谓自谦。故君子必慎其独也。
6. The so-called sincerity of intention means not deceiving oneself. Just as one dislikes a bad smell or likes a beautiful color, this is called self-respect. Therefore, a gentleman must be cautious when alone.
  译文;使意念真诚的意思是说,不要自己欺骗自己。要像厌恶腐臭的气味一样,要像喜爱美丽的女人一样,一切都发自内心。所以,品德高尚的人哪怕是在一个人独处的时候,也一定要谨慎。
1. To make one’s intentions sincere means not to deceive oneself. One should be as repulsed by the stench of decay as one is attracted to the beauty of a woman, with everything coming from the heart. Therefore, a person of high moral character must be cautious even when alone.

  7、物有本末,事有终始。知所先后,则近道矣。
2. Everything has its root and branch, and every matter has its end and beginning. Knowing the order of things is to be close to the Way.
  译文:世上的事物都有本末始终,明确它们的先后次序,那就接近事物发展的规律了。
Translation: All things in the world have their beginning and end, and by clarifying their order of sequence, one can approach the laws of development of things.

  8、古之欲明明德于天下者,先治其国。欲治其国者,先齐其家;欲齐其家者,先修其身;欲修其身者,先正其心;欲正其心者,先诚其意;欲诚其意者;先致其知;致知在格物。
8. In ancient times, those who wanted to enlighten the world with their virtue first governed their country. Those who wanted to govern their country first regulated their family; those who wanted to regulate their family first cultivated their personal life; those who wanted to cultivate their personal life first rectified their mind; those who wanted to rectify their mind first sought sincerity in their thoughts; those who sought sincerity in their thoughts first acquired knowledge; acquiring knowledge lies in investigating things.
  译文:古时候想要使天下人都发扬光明正大的德行,就先要治理好自己的国家;想要治理好自己的国家,就先要管理好自己的家庭;想要管理好自己的家庭,就先要修养自己的身心;想要修养自己的身心,就要先端正自己的心志;想要端正自己的心志,就先要证实自己的诚意;想要证实自己的诚意,就要丰富自己的知识;丰富知识就在于深入研究事物的原理。
1. In ancient times, if one wanted to promote the virtuous deeds of brightness and integrity among the people of the world, they must first govern their own country well. 2. 《中庸》
Inscription by King Tang of Shang on a bathtub: “If you can be renewed for one day, you should maintain renewal every day, and continue to be updated after being renewed.” The Kang Gao says, “Encourage people to abandon the old and seek the new.” The Book of Songs says, “Although the Zhou Dynasty is an old country, it has received a new heavenly mandate.” Therefore, virtuous people pursue perfection everywhere.

  1、天命之谓性,率性之谓道,修道之谓教。
The Doctrine of the Mean
  译文:天赋予人的品德叫做“性”,遵循事物本性就叫做“道”,使人修养遵循道就叫做“教”。
1. The nature bestowed by Heaven is called “xing”; following the nature of things is called “dao”; cultivating and nurturing the “dao” is called “teaching.”

  2、好问而好察迩言,隐恶而扬善,执其两端,用其中于民。

  译文:喜欢向别人请教,而且喜欢体察人们浅近的话语;消除消极的东西,而宣扬人们的善行;善于把握事情的两个极端,采用恰当的做法施行于人民。
1. Likes to seek advice from others, and enjoys understanding people’s simple words; eliminate negativity, and promote people’s good deeds; be good at grasping the two extremes of things, and implement appropriate practices among the people.

  3、博学之,审问之,慎思之,明辨之,笃行之。
2. Extensive learning, inquisitive questioning, careful thinking, clear discernment, and steadfast practice.
  译文:广泛地学习知识,详细地询问事物发展的原因,慎重地加以思考,明确地辨别是非,踏实地去实践。
1. Extensively learn knowledge, inquire in detail about the reasons for the development of things, think prudently, and discern right from wrong clearly, practice with a down-to-earth attitude.

  4、自诚明,谓之性;自明诚,谓之教。诚则明矣,明则诚矣。
2. Sincerity from clarity is called nature; clarity from sincerity is called teaching. Sincerity leads to clarity, and clarity leads to sincerity.
  译文:由于诚恳而明白事理,这叫做天性;由于明白事理而做到诚恳,这是教育的结果。真诚就会明白事理,能够明白事理也就能够做到真诚了。

  5、中也者,天下之大本也。和也者,天下之达道也。

  译文:对上不抱怨老天,对下不责怪别人。所以,君子处在安全的地位而等待天命,小人则冒险以期侥幸成功。
1. Complaining about fate to the heavens above, and blaming others below, thus the gentleman remains in a safe position and awaits destiny, while the petty man takes risks in hopes of a stroke of luck.

  9、 好学近乎知,力行近乎仁,知耻近乎勇。

Be extensive in learning, be meticulous in questioning, be cautious in thinking, be clear in discerning, and be steadfast in practice.

  译文:我每天多次地进行自我反省:为别人办事竭尽全力了吗?和朋友交往免诚实守信吗?老师传授知识,是否用心认真地复习?
Check: I daily review my actions: Was I wholehearted in assisting others? Was I honest and trustworthy with friends? Did I earnestly review the teachings of my teachers?

  4、巧言令色,鲜矣仁!
4. Smooth talkers and flatterers are seldom truly virtuous!
  译文:花言巧语、假装和善的脸色,这样的人很少有仁德的!
